Pedestals
Walls gleaming white
Lights shining bright Everything is perfect But pedestals and mantel pieces, bookcases and big silver frames Can't hold me Can they hold you? Walls gleaming white Lights shining bright Everything is perfect So stand by the hearth and pretend it's the flames that warm you As your eyes scan the room, pretend that you're seeking a face And smile When the road ends and the labyrinth is upon you Who will you be then? When a mighty force brings your castles down What will define you then? When you finally learn that you can't always win Will you still love yourself then? |
Pedestals is the only song to date for which I've written both the music and the lyrics. It's a song about self-definition and how it can change over time.
I wrote it for the graduate wind quintet I played with at Washington State University. |
