Devildance
Devildance has a playful, mischievous, sexy character. It's in a classic rondo form. The A material is composed of two themes, one in the saxophone and one in the piano. The saxophone theme is angular and insistent, bouncing over a changing meter. The piano theme is textural and dense, expanding outward form a single point. Over the course of the piece, the dominance in the A sections shifts from one theme to the other. Between the A sections, a variety of themes appear ranging from lyric and wistful to punchy and dissonant.
The piece started life in 2008 as the middle movement of a sonata. I was unsatisfied with the finished sonata but I felt it had a lot of potential, so I returned to it in 2010 and it was reborn as Devildance.
